Lane estimates that up to one million of these pre-1987 cedar chests may be found in dwellings throughout Canada. The company is offering owners a new, safer lock free-of-charge. The new locks, used on all chests since 1987, must be latched manually from outside the chest and will not be engaged automatically when the lid is closed.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Lane Company of Altavista, Va., is announcing a voluntary program to replace the locks on cedar chests manufactured prior to 1987. The Lane Company manufactured approximately 12 million cedar chests from 1912 to 1987 that latch automatically when the lid is closed. Young children playing in the chest can become trapped inside and suffocate.

From a storage standpoint, cedar chests are great places to keep wool blankets, wool sweaters and other similar items because of their moth repellent qualities. Really, cedar chests are moths’ worst enemy. Back in pioneer times, good cedar chests were the only way they could keep the moths out of their clothes. Can you imagine today, putting that designer sweater away, then pulling it out to find it full of holes and destroyed by moths? Sure there are other ways to get rid of moths, but once you toss mothballs into a chest with your clothes, that moth ball smell never really leaves. The odor in itself can make you hate those clothing items.

Cedar oils, at concentrations present in cedar chests, closets and scented wood blocks, have almost no value as moth or beetle repellents. The value of a cedar chest is that the chest is tightly closed... preventing entry of moths or beetles. So enjoy the aroma of your cedar but don't expect it to chase away any bugs!
For the most part, cedar chests are pretty easy to clean. If you give them a periodic dusting, they will keep looking almost as good as new. This may be part of the reason they were so popular as an heirloom piece, they are relatively easy to maintain. Now, if you are too lazy to dust, you are going to notice that the dust buildup will couple with the waxy surface of your cedar chests and can cause a mess. Thus the reason it's easier to just dust, than have to fix the problem later.
In some cultures cedar chests make great hope chests, the chests that a family prepares for a young woman to take with her when she marries. The cedar chest will be filled with the items she needs to begin a home of her own. That may include table linens, bed linens, china and silverware. All the things a woman traditionally would use to set up a home as her own.
