In the months following Rather's departure, the program came to emphasize live exchanges between Schieffer and the various CBS News correspondents around the world. In contrast to traditional network-news practice, these exchanges are unrehearsed as part of an effort to make the language on the broadcast sound more "natural," according to Schieffer.

CBS News is asking dozens of its affiliates to take a leap of faith in the morning. The network relaunches The Early Show Monday with a new set, a new leader and an end to the "blended" format where some 43 stations covering 20% of the country ditched much of the national feed for its own local programming.

CBS News is aggressively expanding its Internet capabilities to offer a 24-hour news network with a video jukebox that allows consumers to construct online newscasts. Called The EyeBox, viewers can build newscasts from exclusive Web video, material already broadcast on the network, and archival material.

This theme started being used by the CBS Evening News in 1991 and lasted until September 2006. Two years after it debuted, the CBS Evening News switched from a solo anchor format, to a co-anchor format. Connie Chung, the first female since Barbara Walters at ABC to anchor a nightly network newscast, got to sit next to Dan. The pairing, speculated to be for ratings purposes, was not successful due to tensions between the co-anchors and within two years Dan Rather was back to anchoring solo. Since early 2003 NBC News went back into the radio news business... providing one-minute updates to Westwood One affiliates anchored by its big names. ABC News, of course, also has its own radio network and top of the hour news service.
