The Cayman Islands are on Atlantic Standard Time, 1 hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the United States. The Islands do not observe daylight saving time, so when the United States changes to daylight saving time, the time in the Caymans and the east coast of the U.S. is the same.

Though the Cayman Islands are involved in no major international disputes, they have come under some criticism due to the use of their territory for narcotics trafficking and money laundering. In an attempt to address this, the Government entered into the Narcotics Agreement of 1984 and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty of 1986 with the United States, in order to reduce the use of their facilities associated with these activities. In more recent years, they have stepped up the fight against money laundering, by limiting banking secrecy, introducing requirements for customer identification and record keeping, and requiring banks to cooperate with foreign investigators.

In August of this year, a Chief Immigration Officer from the United Kingdom came to the Cayman Islands at the request and expense of the Cayman Islands government. The officer specializes in matters relating to Afghanistan and speaks Farsi. After interviewing the three men individually, the officer was satisfied that the men were indeed Afghan nationals. The officer did... state that she too was not satisfied with the Afghans' account of how they had arrived in the Cayman Islands.
