Catholic Charities is one of the nation's largest social service networks. Through their work, Catholic Charities agencies understand the consequences of poverty first-hand, and ... know the solutions for helping individuals get on a path to self-sufficiency. Catholic Charities has launched a Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America, which is promoting public policy changes to help those living in poverty, with the goal of cutting the nation's poverty rate in half by 2020.
As noted, in addition to the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodoxy, and the Assyrian Church of the East all see themselves as "one holy catholic and apostolic Church" of the Nicene Creed. Anglicans and Old-Catholics together see themselves as a Communion within that one Church, and Lutherans see themselves as "a reform movement within the greater Church catholic."
Salt logo "As an important component of our Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America, Catholic Charities USA strongly supports improvements to our nation's health care safety net," said Hill. "SCHIP not only ensures access to affordable health care for our nation's most vulnerable children, it ... helps families escape poverty."
The efforts of Catholic Charities through the Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America were recognized by government leaders. Father Snyder was invited to testify before the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support on proposals for reducing poverty, and congressional anti-hunger leaders praised the work of Catholic Charities in fighting for more funding for food stamp programs. In addition, Catholic Charities was invited to be one of the panelists questioning presidential candidates on the needs of the poor in a CNN forum last June.

Only Comes' parents and his wife knew about the incident before he decided to go public in 2002, the same year allegations of similar sexual abuse by Catholic priests surfaced nationwide. Matters became even more urgent for Comes when his abuser, who had left the priesthood but taught in a public school, moved to a house five doors away from him.
"At Catholic Charities, we understand the causes, scope and ramifications of poverty," Father Snyder said. "While certain choices and behaviors can lead individuals into poverty, far more often the greater fault lies with the social and economic structures that shape the opportunities for the poor."
