A May 28 parade through Russia's capital city by hundreds of Catholics with banners and crucifixes -- part of the church's millenarian celebration -- elicited mixed reviews from Muscovites. "For some it was a direct challenge to the Orthodox, since prior to that only Russian Orthodox were allowed religious processions in Moscow," said Alexander Soldatov, religion correspondent for the daily English-language Moscow News. "For others it's a sign of improving Russia's religious liberties policy."

The Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican (commonly called Vatican II), which was in session from 1962 to 1965, made major changes to official Catholic theology and liturgy. Liturgical changes included the introduction of the possibility of having Mass in local languages instead of entirely in Latin. Theologically, the council continued the importance of Mary while ... adding a new emphasis on individual and personal holiness. Most controversially, the council opened the possibility of salvation for Jews, Muslims, Protestants and Bahaists.

Religion and Cairo In the original Cairo conference, 170+ countries approved the principals, but objections came from nations with extremist religious factions, including Catholic and Islamic fundamentalists: Argentina, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the Vatican; Algeria, Libya, Malta, and Sudan. Specific objections that have been raised include the Commission on Population and Development's recommendations that (a) reproductive health services should include new methods of emergency contraception, (b) abortion be made safe where it is legal, and (c) that young people have full access to sexual and reproductive health education and services.
