[F]or example, in an emergency, when no Roman Catholic priest is available, a Roman Catholic may, under canon law, receive the Holy Eucharist and receive absolution from an Orthodox priest, but not from an Anglican priest. This ... means that if an Episcopal or Anglican male priest converts to the Roman Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Church confers ordination on him (in its view, for the first time) and excludes women from Holy Orders. This divergence of belief is a considerable block to greater unity, in spite of substantial progress in ecumenical dialogues between Anglicans and Roman Catholics since the Second Vatican Council.

Roman Catholic deacon wearing a dalmatic Catholic beliefs have been clarified by several Councils of the Church convened by the leaders of the church at important points throughout history. The first such council was convened by the first Apostles in Jerusalem around the year 50. The most recent was Vatican II which closed in 1965. The Gospel of Matthew quotes Jesus making this promise to Saint Peter regarding the church, "the gates of hell will not prevail against it".[16] In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes this promise, "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth."[21] In the light of these promises, the Catholic Church believes that it is led by the Holy Spirit and divinely prevented from teaching error in doctrinal matters.[6] Catholic belief on all subjects is summarized in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a book published by the Vatican.[22][5]
