Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) from television and computer monitors were prohibited from all Massachusetts solid waste disposal facilities effective April 1, 2000. Like the waste bans already established for other bulky items (white goods, tires, auto batteries), landfill, combustion facility, and transfer station operators must check every incoming load of solid waste to identify and remove banned materials.

All television receivers and CRT displays equipped with a vacuum tube based high-voltage rectifier or high-voltage regulator tube ... generate X-rays in these stages. These stages are universally housed in a metal enclosure called the "high-voltage cage" made from lead to substantially reduce (and effectively eliminate) exposure. As examples, a 1B3 and a 6BK4 vacuum tube would be installed inside this metal enclosure. For both X-ray and electrical safety reasons, the set should never be operated with the cover of the high voltage cage opened.
The three companies have worked together for years in an effort to recycle CRTs from discarded televisions and computers and manufacture Panasonic television tube funnels, composed of 10 percent post-consumer recycled glass. This is the highest percentage of recycled glass used in television tube production, and the highest proportion practical given today's technology.
