Catherine Howard
built 656 days ago
Catherine Howard was the fifth wife of Henry VIII. Catherine had been a lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves and had come to the attention of Henry. She was much younger than Henry who was now almost fifty and had gained a lot of weight. The marriage took place only weeks after Henry's marriage to Anne of Cleves was annulled in July of 1540. Catherine soon tired of the king and began a series of affairs with men nearer her age. Two of these were Thomas Culpeper and Francis Dereham.

Catherine Howard was a cousin of Henry VIII's ill-fated second queen, Anne Boleyn; and like Anne, Catherine would die on the scaffold at Tower Green. Her birthdate is unknown, but her father was the younger brother of the duke of Norfolk. Though personally impoverished, Catherine had a powerful family name and ... secured an appointment as lady-in-waiting to Henry's fourth queen, Anne of Cleves. While at court, she caught the eye of the middle-aged king and became a political pawn of her family and its Catholic allies. Catherine's greatest crime was her silliness. Raised in the far too permissive household of her grandmother, she was a flirtatious and emotional girl who rarely understood the consequences of her actions.
Catherine Howard earned her A.S. in science from Texarkana College in 1982. She then earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of North Texas in 1984, and a master's in chemistry from UNT in 1986. She completed her doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University in 2001. At Texarkana College, she teaches various chemistry courses and nutrition.
Catherine Howard made a cameo appearance, played by Monika Dietrich, in the 1971 slapstick British comedy Carry On Henry, with Sid James as Henry VIII. Two years later, Lynne Frederick portrayed Queen Catherine in Henry VIII and his Six Wives opposite Keith Michell as Henry VIII.
Catherine Howard was English and born of a noble family. She was a cousin of Anne Boleyn. When she married Henry VIII in 1540 she was 19 and he was almost 50. She was ... a Lady-in-Waiting at his Court. It is said that the time Henry spent with Catherine rejuvenated him. She was, however, accused (rightly) by his courtiers of having many lovers, and so was beheaded (along with the lovers) at the Tower of London in 1542 with an axe.
The ghost of Catherine Howard is said to haunt the Tower of London. Her ghost is said to appear in the bodily likeness to her living person. The ghost of Catherine Howard is believed to haunt her former habitat in the Tower of London. Ghosts are believed to have a surviving emotional memory typical of someone who has died violently, traumatically and tragically - which fits the description of the execution and death of Catherine Howard. It is said that the soul of a ghost is not able to rest in peace and they remain in old and familiar places, repeating the same acts indefinitely until they are released from their endless haunting.
