Gorgeous and aloof, Catherine Deneuve was an icon of the French cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. Born into a family of actors, she made her film debut as a teenager, and as she grew into a woman her cool blonde charms began to turn moviegoers' heads. Though first promoted by filmmaker Roger Vadim in the early '60s, she found her breakthrough role in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Her most famous movies from the era are Repulsion (1965), Belle du Jour (1967) and Tristana (1970). Since the 1970s she has made movies outside of France only infrequently, but was internationally famous as a pitchwoman for Chanel perfume in the 1980s and appeared in the critically acclaimed films The Last Metro (1980) and Indochine (1992, Oscar nomination). Deneuve ... has a cult following for her portrayal of a vampire in The Hunger (1983, with Susan Sarandon) and has appeared in Dancer in the Dark (2000, starring Björk) and the campy musical 8 Femmes (2002).

Catherine Deneuve was born Catherine Fabienne Dorleac in Nazi-occupied Paris on October 23, 1943. Both her father, Maurice Dorleac, and her mother, Renee Deneuve, had acting careers. Catherine, though, had never intended to be an actress. She was drawn into the profession by her older sister, Francoise Dorleac. It was Francoise, not Catherine, who seemed destined to be one of the great French movie stars.

Ihre erste Rolle hatte Catherine Deneuve, damals noch mit dem Namen Catherine Dorléac, als 13-Jährige, in Les collégiennes, im Jahr 1957. 1960 spielte sie mit ihrer Schwester Françoise Dorléac in Les portes claquent (Die kleinen Sünderinnen). Ihr Durchbruch kam 1965 mit der Hauptrolle in Roman Polańskis Repulsion (Ekel), in dem sie eine schizophrene, sexuell unterdrückte junge Frau spielt, die im Wahn zur Mörderin wird. Ihr nächster wichtiger Erfolg war Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (Die Regenschirme von Cherbourg), in dem Jacques Demy Regie führte. Drei Jahre später spielt sie wieder in einem Film von Demy die Hauptrolle, in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (Die jungen Mädchen von Rochefort) an der Seite ihrer Schwester Françoise Dorléac und Danielle Darrieux, mit der sie 35 Jahre später in 8 femmes (8 Frauen) zu sehen ist.

Gathering more international acclamation, Catherine Deneuve emerged in several prominent films such as 1992 film Indochine, which assisted her to attain a César Award as well as an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Actress. Following this she was even cast in some other films Ma Saison Préférée (1993) and Les Voleurs (1995) under the direction of André Téchiné. Apart from appearing in several blockbuster films the actress has even been credited with numerous awards for her extraordinary contribution towards several films. Catherine Deneuve was brought into the international eye when she won the 1964 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or for Best Actress for her portrayal of "Genevive" in Jacques Demy's musical THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. Inspired by her experience in THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, Deneuve resolved to seriously devote herself to acting. She credits Demy for her decision, stating, "He made me learn to act, to love acting for the first time, to believe what I act."
