In one passage Deneuve suggests that the French movie industry's difficulty in finding an audience abroad in recent years comes partly from its obsession with the director as the sole creative force, minimising the role of producers, scriptwriters and actors. "The French concept of the 'author's rights' in a movie puts the director in a position of too much solitude and demands an inhuman degree of excellence." more a personality than an actor". This is almost certainly unfair. The performances Bunuel extracted from her in the 1960s and Truffaut in Le Dernier Metro in 1980 suggest that there is a great actress in there who occasionally comes out to play.

Truffaut biographer Don Allen refers to The Last Metro as the director's "homage" to Catherine Deneuve. To the director's credit, his casting of Deneuve as "an erotic ideal" doesn't overly distract from the film's WWII Vichy France setting.
