Castration: Methods
built 805 days ago
Performance—Animals may demonstrate reduced feed intake and ADG for the first week after castration,20,28 but some discrepancy exists regarding the effect of method of castration on ADG. One study28 reported no difference in ADG in 20- to 21-month-old calves between uncastrated controls, surgically castrated calves, and calves castrated with elastrator bands. Fourteen-month-old calves castrated using elastrator bands had slower growth rates than surgically castrated or uncastrated control calves; ... recently castrated animals finished with body weights similar to those of steers castrated 8 months earlier, suggesting there was no benefit to delaying castration.14 Fisher et al5 observed that surgical castration of 5.5-month-old calves resulted in reduced ADG for the first 7 days after surgery, but calves to which local anesthetic had been administered before castration exhibited higher ADG for the same period when compared with calves undergoing surgery alone. Calves castrated using Burdizzo clamps exhibited ADG similar to control calves for the first 7 days, but ADG was reduced from the 15th to the 21st days after surgery.5 Surgical castration of 6- to 9-month-old bull calves reduced daily weight gain and feed intake.16 No effect of castration was observed on overall growth of 1.5- to 5.5-month-old calves for 42 days after castration using a Burdizzo clamp.31

There are two classical methods for surgical castration. They consist of either an open or closed technique. The decision for either technique is based on surgeon preference. Scrotal ablation (removal) may be discussed by the attending surgeon at the time of consultation. Reasons for scrotal ablation would include the presence of a large, pendulous scrotum at the time of castration or for the treatment of the primary disease (trauma, neoplasia).

Thethree main methods of castration currently practised in Great Britain are elastration or rubber ringing, emasculation by a bloodless castrator and surgical or open castration. Whichever method is used, only fit and healthy lambs should be castrated. Additionally, castration should never be carried out in bad weather.

Historically, castration is one method that has been used for sex offenders in general. Its purpose is to eliminate sex drive so that the offender will lose his motivation to offend. However, it does not always reduce sex drive.

When a woman uses the bear trapping method of castration she rejects any or all of your solutions to her problems and tells you your ideas are useless. You are castrated by never being able to make a difference for the woman, no matter how hard you try and no matter what you do.

Age of the animal at time of castration may affect the severity of the cortisol response. Plasma cortisol levels of 1- to 7-day-old calves castrated using elastrator bands did not differ significantly from those of uncastrated controls.26 Following castration by surgical, Burdizzo clamp, or rubber ring methods, post-castration cortisol concentrations returned to baseline values more quickly in 6- and 21-day-old calves than in 42-day-old calves.21 Use of a Burdizzo clamp or surgical castration produced a minimal response in 11-week-old calves, but a more profound response in 24-week-old calves.30 Cortisol responses of 1.5-month-old and 4.5-month-old calves castrated using a Burdizzo clamp were approximately one-half and one-third, respectively, of the cortisol responses of 5.5-month-old calves castrated using the same method.31
