Additionally, pre-puberty castration can cause a condition called macroskelia -- meaning very long arms, legs, increased height, and tendency to obesity. A person castrated in infancy may have arms that reach to his knees. When riding horseback, the individual’s feet may stretch almost to the ground. On the plus side ... the individual will never experience male pattern baldness -- even if his genes call for it.

The castration of a horse, once it is decided that it will not be a stallion, makes them much more tractable in training and a much more effective athlete. Many of the famous geldings of the past were totally ineffective racehorses as intact males and became stars once gelded.

Your horse will still be fertile (able to impregnate mares) for up to fourteen days after castration. Avoid pasturing him with mares at this time. Studies show that approximately 25% of properly castrated geldings will show some degree of stallion-like behavior after castration, with no difference in incidence of this behavior between those castrated before and after puberty.
