In the news today is a burning question, “Should pædophiles be offered chemical castration?”. To quote Sky News, “Those who have committed crimes such as child sex abuse will be offered the drugs as part of a scheme being unveiled by Home Secretary John Reid.”

In addition to ethical concerns, chemical castration may increase blood pressure in males, sometimes to dangerous levels. Chemical castration may sometimes cause gynecomastia, a side effect that is sometimes treated with tamoxifen, a SERM. Other side effects, such as the formation of abnormal fat deposits in the liver, are being investigated.

Rape Crisis itself states that it is opposed to any form of castration. The organisation says that, aside from the human rights issues, they are not convinced that castration would deter rapists. "What we know of rape as a crime of violence and control mitigates against the notion that chemical castration would either stop rape happening or deter potential rapists," the website states.

NEW YORK Yoko Ono has been appointed spokesperson for a new chemical castration drug, tentatively called “Chop-Chop.” It has just been approved by the FDA after a lengthy delay. It seems laboratory rats wanted nothing to do with her because she was always in the way during recording sessions.

In Europe and the USA there is growing support for surgical castration and chemical castration of paedophiles. At the moment castration is voluntarily but in California, Scandinavia and France it is officially being used as an incentive to early release from prison. But it probably has a bearing on probation boards decisions to release offenders in Britain too.
