Cassandra Peterson: Mistress
built 655 days ago
In 1981, Cassandra Peterson became "horror hostess" for Los Angeles television station KHJ. The show was called "Movie Macabre" and proved to be the beginning of her career as the now famous Elvira, the vampy Mistress of the Dark. The program became syndicated the next year throughout the country. Twenty years later, she's still vamping and camping it up.
After 20 years of wearing the same black wig and low-cut black dress, Cassandra "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" Peterson is still able to shock with a single detail about her costume. It's still the same size.
In 1988, Peterson starred as her flirtatious creation opposite Edie McClurg and Jeff Conaway in the comedy: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Critic Leonard Maltin, in his 2005 Movie Guide, gives the film a "Bomb" rating of no stars on a scale of one to four. The film was a modest success ... as teenage boys everywhere came out in droves to ogle Peterson's ample bosom. Elvira has become a symbol of Halloween, and owns the trademark to her wig and costume. She also sang "Monster Rap" and "Haunted House" on the Elvira's Monster Hits album.
Fans do not often witness Cassandra Peterson's alter ego, Halloween scream queen Elvira, show real emotion. The raven-clad horror maven usually relies on sex appeal and a barrage of wisecracks as her calling cards. But thoughts of friends lost to AIDS and those still living with HIV bring the Mistress of the Dark to tears.
