Cassandra Peterson: Los Angeles
built 502 days ago
It all started as a lark for a struggling young actress and former Vegas showgirl named Cassandra Peterson. When a local Los Angeles TV producer saw her do a couple of comic sketches in 1981 with the Groundlings, an improv-comedy troupe that included future "Saturday Night Live" stars Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman, he invited her to audition.

Peterson went from performing as a Vegas showgirl to doing improvisational comedy and trying to launch an acting career. A gig on a Los Angeles TV station changed her life. As host of a late-night show that featured cheap horror flicks, she created a sexy cross between a Valley Girl and a vampire.

Peterson ... performed with the Los Angeles improv group the Groundlings, so when, in 1981, KHJ-TV was looking for someone who was "sexy and funny" to host its late-night horror films, she was ready for both. Fresh from her honeymoon, Peterson tossed out the script, improvised the part and got the job.
