Cascade Range
built 653 days ago
The Cascade Range has had a complicated geological history. It was formed towards the close of the Pliocene epoch, but was later considerably altered by volcanic action and glaciation. Today the range affords varied opportunities for outdoor recreation, and it has several large parks.
The Cascade Range and the Columbia Plateau are closely related. The plateau came first, built by flood basalt eruptions that culminated in the Miocene about 15 million years ago. (That's Columbia basalt on the right.) The range began farther west and has migrated east over the years, encroaching onto the plateau. Mount Hood, on the left, is part of the Cascades.
Volcanoes of the Cascade Range erupt far less frequently than Kilauea and Mauna Loa, but they are more dangerous because of their violently explosive behavior and their proximity to populated and cultivated areas in Washington, Oregon, and California. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in southwest Washington dramatically illustrated the type of volcanic activity and destruction these volcanoes can produce. Scientific studies of the eruption of Mount St. Helens and the eruptive histories of other Cascade volcanoes continue to improve public awareness and understanding of these potentially dangerous peaks.

The Cascade Range in Oregon is customarily divided into two physiographic subprovinces; Western Cascades and High Cascades. The High Cascades subprovince is built of rocks mainly younger than 3.5 million years and is the modern Cascade Range volcanic arc. In contrast, the Western Cascades encompass a deeply eroded pile of chiefly Oligocene to Pliocene volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks.
