Cascade Natural Gas: Case No
built 652 days ago
Leon Hayes, manager of Yakima's Boise Cascade Corp. lumber mill, returned from a vacation this week to rumors that his plant was shutting down due to the high cost of natural gas. Not true, Hayes said.

Because petroleum and natural gas are formed by similar natural processes, these two hydrocarbons are often found together in underground reservoirs. After gradually forming in Earth’s crust, petroleum and natural gas slowly flow into the tiny holes of nearby porous rocks that serve as reservoirs. Because this porous reservoir rock is often filled with water, the petroleum and natural gas, both of which are lighter than water and less dense than the surrounding rock, migrate upward through the crust, sometimes for long distances. Eventually, some of these upward-moving hydrocarbons become trapped by an impermeable (nonporous) layer of rock, known as the cap rock. Natural gas is lighter than petroleum, so it forms a layer over the petroleum. This layer is called a gas cap.

There are 415 underground natural gas storage facilities in the U.S., including nine facilities in California.7 About 60 percent of California storage capacity is controlled by SoCalGas, an affiliate of Sempra Energy. Another 20 percent is owned by PG&E. Two independent storage facilities have been developed, which has reduced market concentration. All nine facilities are regulated by the CPUC; ... the two non-utility facilities can offer all of their storage capacity at market rates.

At its late-January board meeting in Portland, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance discussed a motion to develop a charter for an ad hoc committee to review the possibility of expanding the Alliance to include market transformation in natural gas markets. The motion failed on a vote of nine in favor and 13 opposed.

Under normal operating conditions, natural gas burns cleanly, producing heat, carbon dioxide and water vapor. However, if natural gas is not burning properly or the appliance has a mechanical problem, it could create carbon monoxide.
