Archibald Alexander Leach (January 18, 1904 – November 29, 1986), better known by his screen name, Cary Grant, was a British film actor. With his distinctive Mid-Atlantic accent, he was noted as perhaps the foremost exemplar of the debonair leading man, handsome, witty and charming. Archibald Alexander Leach was born in Horfield, Bristol, England in 1904. An only child, he had a confused and unhappy childhood. His mother Elsie (who had apparently never overcome her depression after the death of a previous child in infancy), was placed by his father in a mental institution when Archie was ten. His father (who had a son with another woman) told him that she had gone away on a "long vacation", and it was only in his thirties that he found out she was still alive, and institutionalized. After being expelled from Fairfield Grammar School in Bristol in 1918 (for investigating the girls' bathroom), he joined the Bob Pender stage troupe and traveled with the group to the United States in 1920 for a two-year tour.

At the age of 62, Cary Grant would retire from movies to take on his newest and biggest role of a father. Cary Grant's married life could be defined as nothing other than "rocky". Cary was married five times with all but his last marriage ending in divorce. He was survived by his fifth wife after his death in 1986. Cary Grant had only 1 child, a daughter from his fourth wife, the lovely actress, Dyan Cannon. There were many people who accused Carry Grant of being homosexual because of the very close friendship he had with another great Hollywood actor, Randolph Scott.
Archibald Leach - who later became Cary Grant - was born on January 18th, 1904, at 15 Hughenden Road, Horfield, Bristol. He was the son of Elias Leach and his wife Elsie. He was baptised as Archibald Alec Leach on February 9th, but his birth was not registered until 29th February - on his birth certificate his middle name is Alexander. The couple had baby Archie circumcised. This was not (and still is not) a common operation in Britain except on the grounds of religion, and has led some researchers to believe that Elsie was not his biological mother but rather a woman of Jewish parentage, Lillian. There is little evidence for this.
