Cary Grant: North By Northwest
built 635 days ago
Archibald Alec Leach (January 18, 1904 – November 29, 1986), better known by his stage name, Cary Grant, was an iconic English-born actor known for mostly American films. With his distinctive Mid-Atlantic accent, he was noted as perhaps the foremost exemplar of the debonair leading man, handsome, virile, charismatic and charming. He was named the second Greatest Male Star of All Time of American cinema, after Humphrey Bogart, by the American Film Institute. He was well known for starring in classic films such as The Philadelphia Story, North By Northwest, Notorious, To Catch A Thief, Bringing Up Baby and The Bishop's Wife.

Cary Grant was workin' it, fo' sho. A list published in the November issue of GQ names Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest as the most stylish film of all time, meaning the looks it brought to the silver screen went on to have the biggest influence on the sartorial scene. Also making the top 10: Breathless (1959), Ocean's 11 (1960), Purple Noon, 8 1/2, A Hard Day's Night, How to Steal a Million, Blowup, Bullitt and Get Carter (1970). Conspicuously, no Clan of the Cave Bear. read more

After "Notorious" (1946), Grant didn't make a first-rate picture until he worked with Hitchcock again, in 1955's "To Catch a Thief." Between 1957 and 1959, Grant made 7 movies, including "An Affair to Remember," "Indiscreet," and "North By Northwest," one of Hitchcock's finest thrillers that ... represents the pinnacle of Grant's work.

In 1941, Grant teamed up in the first of four films with director Alfred Hitchcock in Suspicion, co-starring Joan Fontaine. Over the following 18 years, Grant and Hitchcock worked together on three more films: Notorious, co-starring Ingrid Bergman (1946); To Catch a Thief, with Grace Kelly (1955); and North by Northwest, with Eva Marie Saint (1959) — perhaps Grant's best role.

At once dashing, charming, and a knavish rogue, Grant was at the top of his game for three decades, making such films as His Girl Friday, Charade, and North by Northwest. His great downfall... came when he turned down a role in what would turn out to be one of the most popular films of all time: Dr. No.

Not to mention None But the Lonely Heart, a thoroughly depressing drama in which Cary plays an average guy trying to make it out of the slums. Anyone who watches a triple feature of Arsenic & Old Lace, None But the Lonely Heart and North by Northwest would never again say that Cary was a John Wayne/Clint Eastwood type who was always the same character. Ridiculous!
