Cartier: French Canadian
built 635 days ago
Cartier sailed from St. Malo on his second voyage to New France, with several French noblemen, on the 19th of May, 1535--Le Grande Hermione was his flagship. Storms soon separated the vessels, but they met at an appointed rendezvous in the Straits of Belle Isle, on the 26th of July. Going westward, they entered the gulf on which Cartier had sailed the previous year; and on the day dedicated to St. Lawrence, they passed into the waters between Anticosti and the main, on the north, to which Cartier gave the name of St. Lawrence. This title was afterward given to the gulf and to the great river at whose mouth Anticosti lies. That island, Cartier named L'Assumption. Its Indian name was Natiscotec, the sound of which from the lips of the natives was, to English ears, Anticosti, and so they called it.
With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Cartier-Bresson enlisted in the French army and was made a corporal in its film and photo unit. On the same June 1940 day that the French government capitulated to Nazi Germany and signed an armistice, the unit was captured in the Vosges Mountains and Cartier-Bresson was transported to a prisoner-of-war camp in Wuerttemberg. He made two unsuccessful attempts to escape in his thirty-five months of captivity, and finally succeeded on his third try. Sneaking back into a France still under German occupation, he obtained false identity papers and managed to find work as a commercial photographer, again in Paris. He was ... active in an underground group that aided escaped POWs like himself, and organized secret photography units that documented the German occupation.

Fonts.com While Cartier, drawn by the Canadian designer Carl Dair, was first shown to the public in January of 1967, this was more an idea for a typeface, than a typeface itself. Even when a font was eventually produced in the fall of the same year, it was still not a finished design.

Fondation Cartier - Liliane Phung From the very outset, the Fondation Cartier was open to all forms of creative expression and committed to the most contemporary trends in art. It has put dancers, musicians, designers, filmmakers, fashion designers and bakers to work, and acquired pieces from Scottish artist Douglas Gordon, American videomaker Matthew Barney and French artist Alain Séchas when they were just starting out.
Returning to Charlesbourg-Royal, Cartier found the situation ominous. The Iroquoians no longer made friendly visits or peddled fish and game, but prowled about in a sinister manner. No records exist about the winter of 1541-1542 and the information must be gleaned from the few details provided by returning sailors. It seems the natives attacked and killed about 35 settlers before the Frenchmen could retreat behind their fortifications. Even though scurvy was cured through the native remedy (Thuja occidentalis infusion), the impression left is of a general misery, and of Cartier's growing conviction that he had insufficient manpower either to protect his base or to go in search of Saguenay Kingdom.
