Cartagena is the choice. But calling the Bocagrande beach "OK" is almost a stretch. The beach is not clean, or particularly beautiful. The sand is dirt brown and people selling stuff are a pest. Plus Bocagrande is overdeveloped. If you like Bocagrande you'd probably think Daytona beach is gorgeous.

Cartagena entered the 20th century with inadequate defences against modern military technology. The "model" threat which could mount an attack was based on the new British armoured vessels which could steam at 18 knots, had armour plate of 229mm thickness and were equipped with guns of 305mm and 152mm caliber with a range of greater than 20Km. In contrast the existing shore defences of Cartagena had a range of only about 12Km and a poor rate of fire.

Cartagena is music, everywhere and anytime. You will listen to music in public transport, streets, bars and even offices. Latin Music in its different flavors dominates the local taste: From Champeta, to Vallenato, Latin Rock or localized Reggaeton. But the most loved music still is the Salsa Music of the 70's and 80's with its heroes like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colón, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz and -last but not least- Cartagena born Joe Arroyo.

Compared to what you may be used to, Cartagena real estate costs are 40-70% LESS, on a square foot basis! This is ... true regarding real estate commissions which average 3%, or about one half of other countries. PLUS, a typical food basket will cost 37% LESS than what's available in Florida. Cartagena also has a deserved reputation for offering excellent medical and dental services, again at great savings, AND with much more personal attention than the medical profession up north has time to offer.
