Carson, Kit
built 656 days ago
Kit Carson grew up on the Missouri border, watching his older brothers, one-by-one, disappearing up the Missouri River or over the Santa Fe Trail. After his father died in a field accident, his mother apprenticed him to a saddlemaker in Franklin. That life didn't suit him and in 1826, at the age of 16, Kit ran away and joined a wagon train bound for Santa Fe. (The saddlemaker reported him as a runaway and offered one penny as a reward to anyone who returned Kit to his place of business in Franklin.)

In 1826, when Kit Carson was sixteen years old, he ran away from his home and job as a saddle maker in Franklin, Missouri. Kit was small for his age but he knew he wanted to be a Mountain Man. He had become acquainted with Charles Bent and Ceran St. Vrain who were fitting out an enormous wagon train filled with trade goods to take to Santa Fe. After Kit talked Bent into hiring him he was on his way to Santa Fe, and would later become one of the noted Mountain Men in the fur trade.

While picking through the belongings that the Jicarillas had left in their camp, one of Major Grier's soldiers came across a book that the White family had carried with them from Missouri: the paperback novel starring Kit Carson. This book must have been shown to him, for he was to comment on it later. This was the first time that the real Kit Carson came in contact with his own myth.
