Carroll plays a pioneer woman and sister to Debbie Reynolds. At the beginning of the movie she meets James Stewart and settles down to raise a family. In the middle of the film her son (played by George Peppard!) tells her that he wants to join the army. The end of the film follows Peppard's story. Peppard and Baker starred in two movies together. In this film Carroll played his real mom.

The opening scene has Malden peeping through a hole in a wall at Baker, who is sleeping in a crib and sucking her thumb. This sets the tone for the movie, as Malden behaves like a reckless idiot and Baker acts like she is half her age. It is difficult to like or sympathize with any of the leading characters, who are selfish and even criminal.
