Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Wrists
built 647 days ago
Although symptoms may be relieved immediately after surgery, full recovery from carpal tunnel surgery can take months. Some patients may have infection, nerve damage, stiffness, and pain at the scar. Occasionally the wrist loses strength because the carpal ligament is cut. Patients should undergo physical therapy after surgery to restore wrist strength. Some patients may need to adjust job duties or even change jobs after recovery from surgery.

This movement will strengthen the wrist operating muscles and promote maximum flexibility of the carpal tunnel bone structure at the same time. If you only have the time/energy to follow one recommendation in this booklet, perform this movement! It should be done whenever you think about your wrists, before you start on a long keyboard session, during a break from such a session, and during your morning exercises. Here is how to proceed:
Many products you can buy - such as wrist rests - are supposed to ease symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Some people may have less pain and numbness after using these products. For others, symptoms may get worse. No one has proved that these products really prevent wrist problems.

Two other useful tests for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome are the Tinel and Phalen maneuvers. Tingling sensations in the fingers caused by tapping on the palm side of the wrist is a positive Tinel test, whereas reproduction of symptoms by flexing the wrist is a positive Phalen test. Dr. Phalen created this maneuver many years ago when he was a hand surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.

Vickie Wakefield, an 82-year-old suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, needed surgery. So her daughter, Mary Wakefield, took her to the hospital for the medical procedure. When it was over, the surgeon called Mary to say that the operation on her mother's right wrist went just fine.

As stated earlier, swelling of the tendons that line the carpal tunnel causes CTS. Although there are many reasons for developing this swelling of the tendon, it can result from repetitive and forceful movements of the wrist during work and leisure activities. Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that job tasks involving highly repetitive manual acts, or necessitating wrist bending or other stressful wrist postures, are connected with incidents of CTS or related problems. The use of vibrating tools ... may contribute to CTS. Moreover, it is apparent that this hazard is not confined to a single industry or job but occurs in many occupations
