Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Tendons
built 634 days ago
The tendons passing through the carpal tunnel can become swollen from doing the same movement over and over, like typing on a computer or playing video games or a musical instrument for long periods of time. It's more common in gymnasts, particularly those who do a lot of handstands, and in people who play racquet sports, like tennis.

The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel, a canal in the wrist that is surrounded by bone on three sides, and a transverse carpal ligament on the fourth. Nine tendons — the flexor tendons of the hand—pass through this canal.[3] The median nerve can be compressed by a decrease in the size of the canal or an increase in the size of the contents (such as the swelling of the lubrication tissue around the flexor tendons), or both. Simply bending the wrist at 90 degrees will decrease the size of the canal.
The protective lining of tendons (called the tenosynovium) swells within the carpal tunnel. Some research suggests that this swelling is caused by build-up of fluid (called synovial fluid) under the lining. Synovial fluid lubricates and protects the tendons.

Reducing the diameter of the tendons in the carpal tunnel. This can be accomplished by causing the tendons to atrophy. (This goal is only for people who already have CTS as a result of strenuous activity).
These technologies can identify swelling of the median nerve and abnormalities of the tunnel wall, its contents and surrounding area. This can include the source of median nerve compression including inflammation of structures in the tunnel such as inflamed tendons, which can occur in rheumatoid arthritis. Other tendon abnormalities, including a ganglion, or excessive fat in the tunnel... can be seen on MRI.
