Carol Reed may be the best director in English-language cinema whose body of work is not widely known. Everyone has seen The third man (UK, 1949) his greatest work. Odd man out (UK, 1947) is reasonably well known. A lot of people - many of them perhaps a very different kind of people - have seen Oliver! (UK, 1968) but how many know who directed it? And some truly fine films, ones that work both as entertainment and as art, are either hard to find or hard to find out about, or both: Our man in Havana (UK, 1959), Night train to Munich (UK, 1940), The fallen idol (UK, 1948), Climbing high (UK, 1938), A kid for two farthings (UK, 1955) The stars look down (UK, 1940) to name some of the best.

In this sentimental comedy, Carol Reed tries for a bit of neo-realist whimsy that takes place in the London slums of Petticoat Lane. The film centers upon Joe (Jonathan Ashmore), a six-year-old London East-ender who believes strongly in the magical power of unicorns. Joe and his lonely mother Joanna (Celia Johnson) live with wily, philosophical tailor Kandinsky (David Kossoff), who convinces Joe that if he could only come upon the legendary unicorn, he could grant all the wishes of his poor neighbors. Taking Kandinsky at his word, Joe searches the slums for a unicorn. Then one morning, he finds one. Only thing is, it is not a unicorn but a baby goat with a growth sticking out of his forehead.

Carol Reed presented the weather portion of the evening newscasts on WCBS-TV in New York City from 1952 to 1964. Not trained in meteorology, she ... proved popular with viewers because of her cheerful demeanor and her characteristic signoff, "Good night and have a happy!" She died in 1970.

Carol Reed was born on the 30th December 1906. He was educated at Kings School and somewhat interestingly was only a few years older at the school than future Brit filmmaker Michael Powell.
It is set in a crumbling, depressed post-war Vienna, divided up by the Allied occupying forces - a city Reed knew well from his wartime experiences. Beautifully shot by Robert Krasker in atmospheric black and white, the city almost seems to be a character in the story. The insistent, haunting zither music is by Anton Karas, whom Trevor Howard discovered playing outside a restaurant in Vienna.
