Carol Burnett: Stars

Throughout the show's run, Burnett maintained, and increased, her creative input and control. She worked closely with a team of writers, among them Ken Welch and his wife, Mitzi, who had a strong sense of Burnett's attributes and strengths. (Ken Welch had written the famous "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" routine which had catapulted comic chanteuse Burnett to fame in 1956.) The show combined musical comedy with humorous sketches, using the ensemble of players as well as weekly guest stars, such as Jim Naybors, Cher, and Julie Andrews.

Each week, hapless Carol would find herself in the most outrageous predicaments. No matter how sketchy the script, the comedienne turned each performance into a farcical romp with her spasmodic interpretations. She quickly became the de-facto star of the program.

In 1986 she starred in Fresno, a six-hour mini-series spoofing Dallas and Dynasty, with Burnett as Fresno's hard-drinking raisin matriarch Charlotte Kensington. With Charles Grodin, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, and Gregory Harrison, it was funny to the finish, but has never been released on video in America.

Beloved U.S. comedienne CAROL BURNETT is set to add JOHN CLEESE to her list of LOVE LETTERS co-stars. The former MONTY PYTHON star will join Burnett for the play, in which she has starred alongside TOM SELLECK, CHARLTON HESTON and LESLIE NIELSEN, later this year (07). Burnett has been touring with the show since 1990.

The words were funny, but what made them hilarious was Burnett. She took everything a step further, regardless of whether it was a simple piece of dialogue, a wacky song or a bit of physical comedy. Few stars can fall like Burnett, and that's one reason few have soared like her.
