Carol Burnett: Roles
built 265 days ago
This Sunday night, Carol Burnett returns to the nation's televisions in a version of Once Upon a Mattress, in which she'll play Queen Aggravian. The role comes more than 40 years after Burnett launched her career with the role of Princess in the Broadway version of Mattress. She won a Tony award for her work.

Burnett had a rags-to-riches route to fame. She worked as a hatcheck girl until she landed her first TV role in 1955 on "The Winchell- Mahoney Show," a kids' program. In 1957, she began appearing in various Manhattan cabarets and nightclubs. Her parents died while Burnett was still in her 20s, and she took on the responsibility of raising her half-sister Christy.

Burnett's first regular series role was on a sitcom called 'Stanley' (Sept. 1956 - March 1957) - one of those early TV shows with a high-quality pedigree that failed to catch on.

In 1964 and again in 1972, Burnett played the pea-plagued princess. Now, she takes on the role of the cranky, crackpot queen -- Queen Aggravain by name, and mistress of her domain. Queenie doesn't want her simpleton son, Prince Dauntless, to marry and leave home, so she makes sure that every prospective bride fails some preposterous test that the queen herself concocts.
