That Carol Burnett found any success at all in the Eighties is a testament to her good taste and abilities. Burnett's dramatic TV-movies of the late-seventies were very popular, tackling a number of controversial issues. For instance, 'Friendly Fire' (1979) told the story of a couple that lost their child due to military accident, another told of a family's anguish over having a gay son.

In 1974 Burnett starred with Alan Alda in a television adaptation of the Broadway play 6 Rms Riv Vu, about two married people who meet while looking for a New York City apartment. In 1979, Carol made her dramatic debut as the mother of a soldier killed in Vietnam in a made-for-TV movie, Friendly Fire, a role for which she received excellent reviews. In 1990 she produced a new variety show, Carol & Company, which lasted two seasons on NBC; her repertory troupe of supporting players included such up-and-comers as Richard Kind, Jeremy Piven, and Peter Krause. Over the years Burnett has made many guest appearances on television programs, including All My Children, Mad About You (for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Emmy Award for her recurring role as Helen Hunt’s mother), and in 2006, Desperate Housewives. She ... starred in several feature films (among them, A Wedding and The Four Seasons) and returned to her Broadway roots in 1995 in the comedy Moon Over Buffalo and in 1999 in the Sondheim revue Putting It Together, a production that began at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

Carol spent most of her childhood in a less-than-glamorous section of Hollywood and attended UCLA before heading to New York. It was a rough beginning as jobs were tough until Carol staged her own musical revue, featuring her out-of-work roommates from a theatrical boarding house performing material by unemployed writers and composers. Soon offers for summer stock and 13 weeks' work on Paul Winchell's TV show followed. Shortly thereafter, while performing at The Blue Angel in New York, she was spotted by talent bookers from both "The Jack Paar Show" and "The Ed Sullivan Show."

That's just one example of how a very determined Burnett has survived pain and loss. Her idealism in the face of difficulty started when she was a young woman who came to New York City in the 1950s to tackle the stage.
Carol starred in the Stephen Sondhiem revue Putting it Together at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and on Broadway. Her best friend Julie Andrews played the same part in the American debut of the show off-Broadway. (edit)
