Carnival: Ships
built 630 days ago
This is ELATION's magnetic postcard through the courtesy of M. Arroyo. ELATION was the first Carnival ship to steer without a rudder. It has two pods that turn the vessel much like a small outboard motor. PARADISE ... has these azipods for manuevering.

Beyond traditional dining, Carnival is gradually introducing specialty eateries, such as an Asian-themed restaurant, a New York-style deli and a pre-dinner sushi bar. Spirit and Conquest-class ships have an upscale "supper club" alternative restaurant (cover charge applies). Other new concepts include a patisserie.

Carnival ships attract happy, high-spirited guests up for a good time. Once aboard, you'll find bright lights, lavish shows, pampering service, and a full gambling casino. And every Carnival vessel features at least three huge swimming pools, a "Nautica Spa" health and fitness facility, energetic clubs and lounges, duty-free shopping malls, an award-winning year-round children's program and a friendly international staff waiting to fulfill your every expectation.

The origin of the name "carnival" is disputed. According to one theory, it comes from the Latin carrus navalis ("ship cart"),[1] referring to a cart in a religious parade, such as a cart in a religious procession at the annual festivities in honor of the god Apollo. Other sources... suggest that the name comes from the Italian carne levare or similar, meaning "to remove meat", since meat is prohibited during Lent.[2] Another theory states that the word comes from the Late Latin expression carne vale, which means "farewell to meat", signifying that those were the last days when one could eat meat before the fasting of Lent. Yet another translation depicts carne vale as "a farewell to the flesh", a phrase embraced by certain carnival celebrations that encourage letting go of your former (or everyday) self and embracing the carefree nature of the festival.

United State Lines who operate MS PATRIOT, an American Classic Voyages' subsidiary, purchased the former NIEUW AMSTERDAM from Carnival's subsidiary Holland America Line in October 2000 for approximately $114.5 million. Recently, Carnival and American Classic had renegotiated the terms of the mortgage on the PATRIOT to defer principal payments to enable the ship to continue sailing. If PATRIOT is returned to CARNIVAL, no specific use has been announced.
