Carnival barkers, operators, and performers may seem like romantic people to youngsters, but many “carnies” are shrewd businessmen. They survey the financial condition of a community before renting the lot or posting the colorful show bills. They may obtain the sponsorship of local churches or charitable groups to gain goodwill and draw crowds.

There are several major differences between Carnival in the state of Bahia in Brazil's Northeast Region and Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The musical styles are different in each carnival; in Bahia there are many rhythms, including samba, samba-reggae, axé, and others, which are performed on a truck equipped with giant speakers and a platform where musicians play called a Trio Elétrico. Massive numbers of people follow the trucks singing and dancing. The "Indian" groups were inspired by Western movies from the United States. The groups dress up as Native Americans and take on Native American names. Blocos Afros, or Afro groups, were influenced by the Black Pride Movement in the United States, independence movements in Africa, and reggae music that denounced racism and oppression.

The carnival's varied shows once included minstrels, dancing girls, and exhibits featuring exotic people and animals. Each was advertised by a barker outside the tent in which the show was performed. Some carnivals still utilize some of these acts.

An inspiration for the carnival lies in the fact that during Lent, traditionally no parties may be held and many foods, such as meat, are forbidden; the forty days of Lent serve to commemorate the Passion of Jesus. It is natural for people to have the desire to hold a large celebration at the last possible opportunity before fasting.
