Los Angeles - Real D, a provider of digital 3D cinema technology, announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement to equip 500 Carmike Cinemas screens with its Real D Cinema technology. The deployment will begin immediately and run through 2007, with 200 of the screens expected to be equipped before the release of Disney's "Meet the Robinsons" in March. The deal with Carmike brings the total number of screens committed to adding Real D technology to 850 worldwide.

Carmike Cinemas going digital - a company-wide conversion to high tech digital projectors from the familiar 35 mm film may lead Hurst to spend more time in the theaters. The digital projector upgrade at Dalton’s Carmike Cinemas 9 in Walnut Square Mall is among 2,300 planned during a 22-month period. Hurst said the company won’t raise ticket prices to offset the new projectors.

Carmike Cinemas and Screenvision, the world leader in cinema advertising, jointly announced today that they have inked an agreement for Screenvision to be the exclusive provider of pre-show advertising across Carmike’s 2,211 screens nationwide. The deal increases the size of Screenvision’s slide network by 29 percent. Screenvision now exclusively controls the entire advertising pre-show - both slides and rolling stock - on 9,700 screens.

The future for Carmike, and the motion picture exhibition business in general, had clouded over in the late 1990s. The industry had reached a point of market saturation that was causing a shakeout of major proportions. Further hurdles, such as the expected conversion to digital projection systems from film and the shortened theatrical lifespan of new releases, might cause further bloodletting. Carmike's track record was a good one... and its experienced management team appeared capable of bringing the company back to health.
