More than 8,200 fans and VIP guests packed the Arena to see performances by Tony Bennett, Kelly Clarkson, MATCHBOX TWENTY, Carlos Santana, George Wallace and a special performance by Jerry Seinfeld. Fans ... were treated with surprise appearances by the Goo Goo Dolls and Hall & Oates. Santana and MATCHBOX TWENTY's Rob Thomas closed the evening with their multi-Grammy Award- winning hit "Smooth." Grammy Award-winning producer, arranger and composer David Foster served as musical director for the 12th year.
Nabbing 10 Grammy nominations is an impressive feat for any artist, but Santana's success is even more surprising considering the maturity of his music. Indeed, "Supernatural" is that rare recording that effortlessly bridges the generation gap. The disc's appeal was enhanced by its many cameo performances. The disc spawned a salsafied hit single titled "Smooth" featuring passionate vocals courtesy of Matchbox 20 singer, Rob Thomas.

Santana's record sales in the 1990s were very low and towards the end of the decade he was without a contract. However Arista Records' Clive Davis, who had worked with Santana at Columbia, signed him and encouraged him to record a star-studded album with mostly younger artists. The result was 1999's Supernatural, which included collaborations with Everlast, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Cee-Lo, ManĂ¡, Dave Matthews and others.
Carlos spent almost five years away from recording, not returning until June 1999 when he issued Supernatural on Arista Records. Produced by the legendary Clive Davis, Supernatural Supernatural included collaborations with Bobby Martin, Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, ManĂ¡, Dave Matthews, and others.
