Carl Gustav Jung (July 26, 1875 - June 6, 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and one-time colleague of Sigmund Freud. At university, he was a student of Krafft-Ebing. For a time, Jung was Freud's heir-apparent in the psychoanalytic movement. After the publication of Jung's Symbols of Transformation (1912), Jung and Freud painfully parted ways. Jung seemed to feel confined by Freud's seeming narrow, reductionistic, and rigid view of libido. Freud held that all libido was at base sexual, while Jung's psychological work continued to explore libido as multiple and often synthetic.

The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, an early adherent of Freud's theories, questioned the degree of emphasis that Freud gave to sexual motivations in personality development. Jung accepted the significant effect of the unconscious processes, but unlike Freud he preferred to emphasize that behaviour is motivated more by abstract, even spiritual, processes than by sexual drives.

Carl Gustav Jung was born on 26. July 1875 and studied medicine in Basel. From 1900 to 1909 he worked as a psychiatrist at the Burghölzli mental hospital in Zurich where he introduced Freud's psychoanalysis together with Eugen Bleuler. In 1912, after six years of friendship, Jung parted with Freud due to theoretical differences and went on to craft his own Analytical Psychology. In 1935 he became a Professor at the ETH in Zurich and in 1944 Professor of Medical Psychology at the University of Basel. Jung married Emma Rauschenbach in 1903; they had 5 children.
