Silicon Valley real estate giant Carl Berg has confirmed he is likely to sell his properties — including the buildings that house Apple, Microsoft and Fujitsu’s valley operations — to a private equity buyer for $1.8 billion. The Mercury News has the story.

Berg was professor of pharmaceutical botany at Berlin University. Schmidt both drew and lithographed the plates. He was a prolific artist who illustrated many of the German botanical works of the 19th century. Jackson describes this work, a survey of plants used in the Prussian pharmacopoeia, as "A thoroughly good book, probably the very best of its class; both in text and illustrations".

Back in Hawaii, Berg, who had spent most of his career as a marine biologist, turned his back to the ocean and noticed how magnificent the mountains, forests and valleys were. He says, "I started hiking, camping and appreciating everything I saw on land."
