Caribbean Literature: Writers
built 669 days ago
"The publication of The Oxford Book of Caribbean Short..., has filled a void on the shelves of Caribbean literature....These...selections may not be the usual, anthologized fare. Yet they all speak of the harsh beauty of life in the tropics these writers know and love so well."--

Caribbean Women Writers The book begins with an analysis of existing descriptions of Caribbean literature, current literary maroon theory, and a conceptualization of the maroon paradigm. It then studies the appearance of literary conventions in early modern representations of the Caribbean, such as The Tempest. The volume then looks at 19th-century narratives and their predominant feature, the culture of abandonment. The rest of the book discusses 20th-century Caribbean literature, the dialogic relationship between modern and early modern works, and the contribution of women writers to the progression of the Caribbean narrative at the close of the 20th century.
Aimed at students and general readers, this two-volume reference provides background information on a wide range of Caribbean literature. Arranged alphabetically, most of the more than 700 cross-referenced entries are devoted to individual authors. These feature a biographical profile, a brief analysis of the writer's key works, and a summary of the themes he or she addresses. Other entries cover literary genres, historical figures, cultural leaders, and various special topics. Each entry concludes with a list of relevant books, articles, and websites, and some are ... accompanied by a b&w author photo.
