The second half of this volume is dedicated to the history and criticism of the Francophone Caribbean literatures of Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guyana. It includes an introduction to the literary history of these places as well as essays on language, popular and literate cultures, the islands and territories themselves, and literary genres published there (the novel, poetry, theater, and essays). There is an index to the names of writers and significant historical figures at the end of the book.
