The ten original Care Bears consisted of Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Cheer Bear, Friend Bear, Funshine Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear, Love-A-Lot Bear, Tenderheart Bear and Wish Bear. Later on, additional bears joined them, as well as the Cousins.

With names like Love-a-Lot Bear, Funshine Bear and Good Luck Bear, the Care Bears seem designed more for expressing simple, benign feelings, than for starring in adventure stories. And there's a good reason for that — their origins lie not in TV animation, not in toys, but in greeting cards. (Which probably explains why one of them is called Birthday Bear.)

[A] mean bear called Grizzle, who doesn't understand the Care Bears and their "caring stuff", has a new plan to conquer Care-a-lot. He creates a "ride" called the "CareTaker" that steals the Care Bears' belly badge. But he needs three ingredients to make the CareTaker work: a shiny sunshine (Funshine's symbol), a powerful stormy cloud (Grumpy's symbol) and a colorful rainbow (Cheer's symbol). He sends out Wingnut on a mission to Care-a-Lot to get the three ingredients. When Wingnut meets Oopsy, they became friends. So, Wingnut takes his new friend to Grizzle's lair.
