The first Cardcaptor Sakura movie takes place during the TV series. You can safely watch it after seeing around ten episodes or so and not spoil much. The story doesn't really add to the ongoing plot but it's very good on its own. If you're looking for something that develops the main characters or expands the TV plot, the second movie is much better in this respect. Despite this, it's still a really fun movie. The animation is excellent and the city scene backgrounds are amazing.

If you are new to Cardcaptor Sakura, then you might not realize that it was made in 1999. For its time, the art was amazingly amazing. From the opening sequence, you can point out minor details such as the movement of Sakura's costume in the wind and the animation of her hair was just so realistic. Lip syncing was awesome, and facial expressions were especially awesome. And then, there are the action scenes themselves. When the cards are released/captured, there's a "wow" moment that you don't expect to see in a typical magical girl series.

In a sense, Cardcaptor Sakura is a "collecting" show, like Pokemon, Digimon, or a myriad of other collecting-themed cartoons. However, Cardcaptor Sakura vastly outstrips these other shows in quality. And while it does not match Pokemon/Pocket Monsters in terms of sheer popularity, Cardcaptor Sakura was immensely popular and remains so to this day. This fact further highlights the travesty that is the American Cardcaptors production—it could have been huge with American children as well.

In Sweden, where the series aired in 2005, the English title Cardcaptor Sakura is being used. All the characters retain their original names, and the series uses the subtitled uncut version of the original opening sequence.
In terms of genre, Cardcaptor Sakura ... fits the "magical girl" category. Sakura does have her own magical powers which grow stronger as the series progresses in addition to the powers bestowed upon her through the use of the Clow Cards. However, in addition to these abilities, Sakura is also constantly called upon to muster her bravery, wits, and the help of her friends in order to capture the Clow Cards.

Card Captor Sakura At the end of each Cardcaptor Sakura episode, there is a special by Kero-chan called Omikase where he explains some parts of the episode. Although this is normal for most anime, of which CCS is not an exception, this just confirms that this is really an anime for elementary-school children. There is even a sample of artworks by children drawing kawaii Kero-chan after the program.
