"The car count was excellent and the first Summer Spectacular race had 18 cars. Did they ever put on a show for the fans." Those were the words of promoter David Brown of Brown Motorsports after the first of eight special events planned for Auburndale Speedway. Though the fans count was not terrific, it was way down almost everywhere due to the bitter cold temperatures, the racing was entertaining for those in attendance.

In off-road racing, various classes of specially modified vehicles, including cars, compete in races through off-road environments. In North America these races often take place in the desert, such as the famous Baja 1000. In Europe, "offroad" refers to events such as autocross or rallycross, while desert races and rally-raids such as the Paris-Dakar, Master Rallye or European "bajas" are called "cross-country rallies."

For the second consecutive week, Mark Martin will not be in a race car on Sunday. He plans on going to Batesville, Ark., where he will have a big cookout during the race with some of his oldest friends. Regan Smith again will drive the No. 01 Chevrolet.

Drag racing is two cars head-to-head, the winner proceeding to the next round. Professional classes are all first to the finish line wins. Sportsman racing is handicapped (slower car getting a head start) using an index (a lowest e.t. allowed), and cars running under (quicker than) their index "break out" and lose. The slowest cars, bracket racers, are ... handicapped, but rather than an index, they use a "dial-in".

Sunday was the first race of the "Car of Tomorrow," an entirely different vehicle than the current model. The COT will race at about half the races this year. So Toyota not only had to develop one car, they had to develop two.
