Capital Punishment: Societies
built 288 days ago
[One] argument on behalf of capital punishment is self-defense. J.P. Moreland said, "Capital punishment is to the whole society what self-defense is to the individual."2 Capital punishment is society's way of defending itself against evil-doers who wish to do them personal injury. Understood in this light the practice is entirely reasonable, and entirely just.

Capital Punishment has been around in most societies from before recorded history. It has been seen as a natural and valid instrument of the law in the past and is still seen that way in much of the world today.
A second objection to capital punishment questions the validity of applying the Old Testament law code to today's society. After all, wasn't the Mosaic Law only for the Old Testament theocracy? There are a number of ways to answer this objection.

The execution of Tucker underscored another dichotomy -- that capital punishment not only cleaves society, but often pits one victim against another. The brother of Deborah Thornton, Tucker's female victim, campaigned for her death sentence to be commuted, while the husband of that same victim cried out for Tucker to be executed
[E]ven if capital punishment was not a deterrent, it is still a necessary option in society. It holds in check the growth and spread of hardened criminals. A careful study is warranted of the expression “so you shall put away the evil from your midst” (Deuteronomy 13:5; 17:7; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21; 1 Corinthians 5:13).
