Capital Punishment: People
built 291 days ago
Some people advocate that which they know not, such as support for capital punishment. Their frame of reference is wholly inaccurate, and so must their approach to the rectification of the social ills in America be inaccurate as well. But what is the frame of reference of a "new abolitionist"? It is the proper understanding of "capital punishment," especially denotatively, for this (denotation, or etymology) deals with true meaning, and true meaning enables its believers to go about definitively in their struggle.
Unfortunately, when Christianity became legalized, many began to relax the prohibition against violence --- including capital punishment. It even came to the point that during the Middle Ages some people convicted of teaching heresy were condemned to death by certain church officials.

Supporters of capital punishment advocate the fact that capital punishment is an effective deterrent, that is, it discourages people from committing crimes. Might be this is true to a certain extent. If people know that they will be condemned to death if they commit a serious offence, might be they will not commit any crime after all.
If such a referendum produced a clear yes vote, the Government would have a genuine mandate to proceed upon and could claim the support of the people... substantially reducing the influence of the anti-capital punishment lobby. There should be another referendum about 5 years later so that the effects of reintroduction could be reviewed and voted on again. Referenda have the advantage of involving the public in the decision making process and raising awareness through the media of the issues for and against the proposed changes.
[M]ost of the social and philosophical arguments against capital punishment are really not arguments against it at all. These arguments are really arguments for improving the criminal justice system. If discrimination is taking place and guilty people are escaping penalty, then that is an argument for extending the penalty, not doing away with it. Furthermore, opponents of capital punishment candidly admit that they would oppose the death penalty even if it were an effective deterrent.(5) So while these are important social and political issues to consider, they are not sufficient justification for the abolition of the death penalty.
