Cape Cod

Although Cape Cod is known as a summer paradise, increasingly people are visiting during the "off" season to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The sea is an intricate part of everything Cape Codders do and various celebrations take place throughout the year. There are only two bridges to access the Cape, which requires vacationers to slow down and go with the local pace. The fresh salty air, quaint villages, picturesque harbors, unspoiled woods and marshes make it very easy to unwind.

In the past few years virtually all residents of Cape Cod and the Islands have been caught in the mass exodus of insurance companies from the region. Policies have been abruptly cancelled with the only option being the government Fair Plan insurance with its higher rates and deductibles. Now a company in Rhode Island is attempting to offer insurance plans that will be more affordable than Fair Plan insurance.

Although Cape Cod has a year-round population of about 230,000, it experiences a tourist explosion each summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day, as the New England cold gives way to a brief but comfortable summer. Many businesses are specifically targeted to summer visitors, and close during the 8 to 9 months of the "off season." In the late 20th century, tourists and owners of second homes began visiting the Cape more and more in the spring and fall, softening the definition of the high season and expanding it somewhat. Some particularly well-known Cape products and industries include cranberries, shellfish (particularly oysters and clams) and lobstering.

An early morning fire destroyed an historic restaurant that once stood on Cape Cod in January, and authorities are questioning the owners and chefs in the suspicious blaze. Police officials have not publicly ruled arson in the fire, but signs point in that direction. Scott Taylor, a chef at The Bridge restaurant who was poised to buy it from the Prete family of Scottsdale, Ariz., was asked by police to take a polygraph in order to rule him out as a suspect. Taylor's lawyer has called out to the owners and asked them to take a test as well. Police said they have no suspects in the fire, but are simply looking to interview everyone with ties to the establishment, which stood for decades. Its wooden frame did nothing to withstand the fire and it was deemed a total loss.

Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod... berths several whale watching fleets who patrol the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Most fleets guarantee a whale sighting (mostly humpback, finback, and sei whales), and one is the only federally certified operation qualified to rescue whales. Provincetown has also long been known as an art colony, attracting writers and artists. Many hotels and resorts are friendly to or cater to gay and lesbian tourists and it is known as a gay mecca in the summer.[9]

The Cape Cod affiliate is led by Patricia Mathison, who along with her fellow nurses Judi Franklin and Annie Dugan, founded the organization "Connecting Hearts." The Southeastern Massachusetts chapter is led by Muriel "Rusty" Watterson of Taunton, who with friends and family founded the organization "Operation Defibrillator." Both organizations have been working to expand the deployment of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), provide CPR training and educate the public about sudden cardiac arrest.
