Capacitor: Series

ESL: ESL is the equivalent series inductance of a capacitor. Since most electrolytic capacitors are basically a large coil of flat wire, it will have even more inductance than it would have if it were flat. This inductance, along with the small amount of inductance from the wire leads, will make up the ESL of the capacitor. The ESL is essentially the same as having an inductor in series with an ideal capacitor. Low ESL is desirable when using capacitors for filtering purposes.

Fig 5 This lossy capacitor (which is worse than any typical real-world component) is next used in the same circuit shown in Figure 4. When we look at the amplifier signal (across the 22k resistor) the frequency shifts up by 11mHz (milliHertz) and there is a loss of 3.3mdB (yes, milli decibel) at 10Hz, with a loss of 4mdB right through the audio band and up to 1MHz. This can be considered utterly insignificant. The vast majority of all loss is caused by the series resistance (which is exaggerated for clarity). Lest anyone think that the dielectric loss or leakage resistance may cause a phase variation, that too is insignificant. The phase angle at 10Hz is just under 36°, with the lossy capacitor being 0.047° different.
If capacitor is installed in circuit with harmonics, normally it should be equipped with 6% series reactor. For circuit with significant 5th harmonic, it should be equipped with 8% series reactor. For the circuit with 3th harmonic, like arc furnace, it should be equipped with 13% series reactor. For the capacitor installed as non-fixed use, it should be equipped with 6% series reactor.
The tone control is comprised of a 0.1- microfarad capacitor in series with the variable resistor that is adjusted by the control knob. This network is placed directly from the red pickup lead to ground. The volume control is a simple potentiometer wired between the red pickup lead and ground with the wiper being fed to the output jack.

Most AC power capacitor failures experienced in large UPS systems are avoidable. Capacitor failures can give rise to UPS failure and can in some cases cause critical load drops on stand-alone and paralleled systems. AC capacitor failures have historically been ascribed to unavoidable random failure or supplier defect. [One] type of electrolytic capacitor utilizes compressed tantalum powder and the baking of manganese oxide (MnO2) as an electrolyte. Nonpolarized electrolytic capacitors can be constructed for use in ac circuits. In effect, they are two polarized capacitors placed in series with their polarities reversed.
