Capacitor: Dielectric
built 631 days ago
This is a general listing of Capacitor manufacturers and vendors. The listing is subdivided by dielectric material. The types of products or devices the manufacturer produces are listed under the company name, in alphabetic order. In many cases a particular manufacturer will produce capacitors of each dielectric material, but not in all cases. Additional component manufacturers may be found by selecting the Components icon below, or Equipment manufacturers may be found by selecting the OEM Equipment icon.

The generalised equivalent circuit of a capacitor is shown in Figure 2. The nominal capacitance is the value of C¹, with ESR and ESL (equivalent series resistance and inductance) in series. The parasitic capacitances (C² - Cn) and their series resistances represent the dielectric loss (resistance) and dielectric absorption (capacitance). These are infinite, with ever diminishing capacitance and series resistance. Figure 5 shows values used for simulation purposes.

Polystyrene capacitors have been long time favorite capacitor of audiophiles and high-end audio manufactures such as Telefunken, Blaupunkt, etc. Polystyrene Film capacitors are often referred to as the Holy Grail of Film Capacitors due to their most desirable electrical characteristics such as exceptionally high insulation, low leakage, low dielectric absorption, low distortion and excellent temperature stability. In most instances polystyrene capacitors (often referred to as Styroflex or Styro in Europe) can be used as a direct substitute for silver mica and/or ceramic disc capacitors.

Cornell Dubilier announces its newly executed capacitor website, www.cde.com. It features one-click access to ten technical papers, three capacitor life-temperature calculators, a thermal modeling applet and one-click access to capacitor types by dielectric, application, or type letters. Advanced parametric search pulls up individual ratings, links to data sheets, Cornell Dubilier and distributor stock. Application Guides and Product Selector Guides make it easy to steer you through Cornell Dubilier’s eight major dielectrics and more than 220 capacitor types. The new site includes RSS feeds so that you can automatically be updated on the latest Cornell Dubilier news, technology and RoHS compliance. Cornell Dubilier

A basic capacitor is made up of two conductors separated by an insulator, or dielectric. The dielectric can be made of paper, plastic, mica, ceramic, glass, a vacuum or nearly any other nonconductive material. Some capacitors are called electrolytics, meaning that their dielectric is made up of a thin layer of oxide formed on a aluminum or tantalum foil conductor.

A capacitor consists of two electrodes or plates, each of which stores an opposite charge. These two plates are conductive and are separated by an insulator or dielectric. The charge is stored at the surface of the plates, at the boundary with the dielectric. Because each plate stores an equal but opposite charge, the total charge in the capacitor is always zero.
