A decoupling capacitor is a capacitor used to decouple one part of a circuit from another. Noise caused by other circuit elements is shunted through the capacitor reducing the effect they have on the rest of the circuit. It is most commonly used between the power supply and ground.
simple system As voltage starts to rise, the capacitor will absorb energy which will tend to keep the voltage from rising as quickly as it otherwise would. If the voltage starts to fall, the capacitor's stored energy will flow out of the capacitor to try to keep the voltage up. A capacitor's ability to absorb/release energy from/to external circuits depends on the capacitor's specs (capacitance, ESR, ESL...), the output impedance of the power source (alternator and power wire in this case) and the circuit's input impedance (into the amplifier's power supply).

A bad ESR in a cap detects the vast majority of capacitor failures. If the capacitor is 1uF or larger you can test in-circuit, eliminating the time required to remove the capacitor. Amazingly, the Capacitor Wizard finds bad caps in-circuit that even very expensive capacitance meters totally miss with out-of-circuit testing!
A non-polarized ("non polar") capacitor is a type of capacitor that has no implicit polarity -- it can be connected either way in a circuit. Ceramic, mica and some electrolytic capacitors are non-polarized. You'll ... sometimes hear people call them "bipolar" capacitors.
If the capacitor is physically large it is more likely to be dangerous and may require precautions in addition to those described above. New electrical components are no longer produced with PCBs. Disambiguation: Please keep in mind that PCB in electronics usually means Printed Circuit Board, unlike in chemistry where it may be used as seen above.
structure of a capacitor In this practical, you will make your own capacitor and use it to control the frequency of an astable circuit, producing pulses. By monitoring frequency changes, you can find out what happens to the size of the capacitor when you change the area of overlap of the plates, or change the space between them.
