Capacitor: Circuits

To help illustrate capacitor-switching transients, the system shown in Figure 1 was modeled and simulated with a transient analysis program. The figure shows a typical distribution substation with three primary distribution circuits as well as a three step 4500 kvar automatic capacitor bank. The capacitor bank is equipped with 0.040 mH transient inrush reactors to limit the frequency and magnitude of the transient currents associated with back-to-back capacitor bank switching. (Note: As will be explained later in this document, the inrush reactors have an insignificant impact on improving power quality from switching transients seen by the system. The inrush reactors are installed to prevent premature vacuum switch failure from back-to-back capacitor bank switching transients).

Traditionally, if a video application is AC coupled, it will require a very large output coupling capacitor (between 220F and 1000F). SAG correction provides excellent performance with a small output coupling capacitor, which eliminates the need for a large coupling capacitor. The typical output circuit (220F into a 150 ohm load) creates a single pole (-3dB) at 5Hz. Reducing this capacitor causes excessive phase shift, resulting in video field tilt which can prevent proper recovery of the synchronization signals.

In signal processing, a capacitor and resistor smooth the spikes and sharp edges from a signal. In DRAM chips, capacitors are microscopic cells that hold the 0s and 1s (bits). Logic circuits, which are mostly transistors and resistors, may ... contain capacitors. See tantalum capacitor and ferroelectric capacitor.
Fig 11 In Figure 12, you can see the waveform of the switching pulse with (red) and without (green) the series inductance and resistance - a comparison between a real and a perfect capacitor. Note that there is very little difference. This, despite the fact that in theory the 'combination' capacitor has a series resonance of 35kHz, and the switching speed is many, many times that. Using a much smaller capacitor (such as 100nF) is a disaster, allowing the circuit to ring, and develop excessive back-EMF. Feel free to perform the test using real components - you will get very similar results!
The energy stored in a capacitor can be used to represent information, either in binary form, as in DRAMs, or in analogue form, as in analog sampled filters and CCDs. Capacitors can be used in analog circuits as components of integrators or more complex filters and in negative feedback loop stabilization. Signal processing circuits ... use capacitors to integrate a current signal.
A polarized ("polar") capacitor is a type of capacitor that have implicit polarity -- it can only be connected one way in a circuit. The positive lead is shown on the schematic (and often on the capacitor) with a little "+" symbol. The negative lead is generally not shown on the schematic, but may be marked on the capacitor with a bar or "-" symbol. Polarized capacitors are generally electrolytics.
