Capacitor: Charge

Unlike the environmentally unfriendly battery back-up used in traditional storage systems, the RoHS- and WEEE-compliant ftScalable array uses new EnviroStor(TM) super capacitor technology for 100 percent data protection during power failures. Its long, maintenance-free operational life eliminates the costs and pre-maintenance performance degradation associated with conventional batteries. EnviroStor's ability to quickly charge and restore data results in a near-instantaneous return to full performance on cache reads and writes.

In the same year, Dutch physicist Pieter van Musschenbroek independently invented a very similar capacitor. It was named the Leyden jar, after the University of Leyden where van Musschenbroek worked. Daniel Gralath was the first to combine several jars in parallel into a "battery" to increase the total possible stored charge.

This demo shows how the test light brightness indicates the charge level in the capacitor. Put your cursor over each capacitor charge status and watch the brightness of the test light. If you have a slow connection, it may take a second or two for each image to load. Click on the amplifier below and the image's position will be optimized.

In SI units, a capacitor has a capacitance of one farad when one coulomb of charge is stored due to one volt applied potential difference across the plates. Since the farad is a very large unit, values of capacitors are usually expressed in microfarads (µF), nanofarads (nF), or picofarads (pF).

This is a measure of a capacitor's ability to store charge. A large capacitance means that more charge can be stored. Capacitance is measured in farads, symbol F. However 1F is very large, so prefixes are used to show the smaller values.

To keep noise out of the power supply and digital signal circuitry, a capacitor charge is used as the sole reference voltage. This technology allows deep bass and clear mid-high range reproduction.
