Cantonese is the principal language of the Kwangtung province in Southeast China, parts of the Kwangsi province and of Hong Kong and Macao. In addition, Cantonese is spoken by ethnic Chinese in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, and Malaysia. Almost all Americans of Chinese descent in the United States are of Cantonese origin.

The greatest concentration of Cantonese speakers are located in southeast China, mainly in the populous Guangdong province, parts of Guangxi province, the island of Hainan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Other southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam ... have a significant number of speakers. There are large and well established Cantonese communities all around the world, notably in North America, Europe, and Australia. Cantonese speakers were the earliest Chinese immigrants in many of these countries and despite the more recent migration of Mandarin and Hokkien speakers, the Cantonese still form a majority among the Chinese population in most countries.

Cantonese (Gwong Dung Wah) is one dialect or form of the Chinese language. It is spoken in the most south-easterly province of China, of which Canton is the capital. Cantonese refers to the dialect spoken in Canton city, but ... include a whole group of similar dialects spoken in the area of the western half of Kwantung province and southern half of Kwangsi province (Gwong Sai). Outside of China, Cantonese is the most widely spoken form of the Chinese language and is the native speech of both Hong Kong (Heurng Gohng) and Macao (Ou Moon).

Although used extensively by native speakers on many occasions, Cantonese is not the medium of education even in Guangdong. Nor is it the language used on official occasions in the Peoples' Republic of China because Mandarin is the official language. In Hong Kong... it is the medium of instruction in many schools.

The word Cantonese comes from Canton, the former English name of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, which was once considered the home of the purest form of Cantonese. However, through years of mass media and pop culture influence, Hong Kong has now truly become the cultural centre of Cantonese.
