The original production of "Candide" was not the resounding success that was anticipated when it premiered on Broadway in 1956, given the stellar lineup of artistic talents who were involved in its creation. How did the erstwhile flop turn into a critically acclaimed, popular hit that both opera and theater companies continue to perform? Find out in the essay by author and theater professor Thomas Hischak. Meet one of Broadway's best, singer-actress Patti LuPone, who plays The Old Lady in this production of "Candide," in Dialogue. Review the plot, read a biography of the composer, watch performance excerpts, and find a list of the main characters in the illustrated "Candide" Companion. Finally, see the full catalogue of music from the evening's program in the song list.

Candide, probably written in 1758 and published in 1759, is a novel of satire, irony, sarcasm, and hyperbole. Candide has ... been identified by the French term [C]onte philosophique, meaning philosophical novel or philosophical story, a genre Voltaire is credited with inventing. His contes philosophiques (which also include Micromégas and Zadig) are characterized by a “swift-moving adventure story in which characterization [counts] for little and the moral (or sometimes immoral) lesson for much” (Brumfitt, J.H. Voltaire: Candide. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1968, Page 9.) Voltaire’s sentences are brief and sharp as a burr. Modern English speakers studying French will find that the original text is easy to understand (although translating it is not so easy because of the subtlety and power of Voltaire’s wit).

Candide has finished production of an online companion to TRADE SECRETS: A MOYERS REPORT. The two-hour investigative documentary, premiering on PBS stations Monday, March 26, at 9 pm, opens the chemical industry's secret archive and reveals how the public was kept in the dark about the dangers of toxic chemicals. The TRADE SECRETS companion site takes users beyond the main themes of the show. Along with additional information on the issues raised in the investigative report, the site provides the full text of all documents cited in the program. It ... features a bulletin board where viewers -- as well as individuals in the chemical industry, environmental organizations, and public health fields -- can post their thoughts in what is likely to be a very lively discussion. The Web site can be found at http://www.pbs.org/tradesecrets

In 2006, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the creation of Candide, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris produced a new production under the direction of Robert Carsen. The production was to move to Milan's Teatro alla Scala in 2007 and to the English National Opera in 2008. The production transforms the proscenium into a giant 1950s-era TV set, and has Voltaire, appearing as the narrator, changing channels between certain scenes. Carsen sets the action in a 1950s-1960s world, with an American slant commenting on contemporary world politics. This production was filmed and broadcast on Arte. For an open-house day in French opera houses on February 17, 2007, this video was projected in high definition on a screen filling the proscenium of the Théâtre du Châtelet.
